A Section 7 report is a written assessment prepared for the family court to help decide what’s best for a child when parents can’t agree. It’s usually carried out by a Cafcass Officer (Cafcass is the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service).
The report gets its name from Section 7 of the Children Act 1989, which allows the court to request a professional evaluation of your child’s needs and the family situation.
A court might order a Section 7 report when:
· Parents can’t agree on who the child should live with or how much time they should spend with the other parent
· There are concerns about a child’s welfare or safety
· One parent has raised allegations, such as domestic abuse, neglect, or emotional harm
· The court needs more information to decide what arrangement would be in the child’s best interests
Section 7 reports are often ordered when basic information isn’t enough and a more detailed understanding of the family dynamic is needed.
The person writing the report will usually speak to both parents (separately), meet with the children (if they’re old enough) and speak to the school and any professionals involved with the child.
The report will offer recommendations to the court, always focusing on the child’s welfare as the top priority.
If you’re part of a Section 7 assessment, you should be honest and try to stay child-focused. Try to explain what you think your child needs, not just what you would like. about what your child ne about what.
A Section 7 report is there to help the court make the right decision for your child when you and the other parent can’t agree. It’s not about “taking sides”—it’s about making sure your child’s safety, happiness, and long-term wellbeing come first.
